Disappointment
by Hannah Hanzel
Lofty expectations
Vivid imaginations
Shattered trusts
Unfulfilled lusts
Meticulous plans
Empty hands
Towering bar
Toiling far
Have you been disappointed this year? Maybe in a person, place, event or thing? Maybe in your spouse, boss or close friend? Maybe in your big office, new house or vacation condo? Maybe in your wedding, graduation or birthday?
Disappointment is heavy.
It’s carried in our minds, spreading lies to guard against hope.
It’s carried in our hearts, spreading lies to guard against love.
It’s carried on our backs, spreading lies to guard against need.
Some of you reading this are caring for recovering family members. Some of you are barely living paycheck to paycheck. Some of you are experiencing more-than-complicated family dynamics. Some of you are feeling the pang of loneliness. Some of you are simply worn out.
Did you imagine you would be here, and that you would be this version of yourself (for better or for worse)? Are you disappointed in yourself?
Are you disappointed in God?
You’re not alone. Please believe that. Take a moment to take a deep breath. As you breathe in, think on John 14:27 when Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you…” As you exhale, think on Matthew 28:20 when He also says, “I am with you always.”
