For I Am His, and He is Mine

by Taylor White

You probably have certain songs and lyrics that just seem to resonate with your soul. You know, those tear-producing, chill-provoking, smile-inducing, hand-raising, hallelujah-screaming kind of truths (maybe not screaming, we are a Baptist church for goodness sake.) As worship begins, I sometimes can only think about getting to that part of the song, that anticipated chorus or line that echoes the cry of my heart. Recently I’ve noticed a theme emerge in those lyrics I love most…they often include the theme of our union with Christ. As the beloved hymn “In Christ Alone” proclaims, “…for I am His and He is mine.” The truth that I am in Him, and He is in me has brought me much peace, strength and hope in times of uncertainty. Here are some of the biblical truths wrapped up in this simple yet theology-packed phrase:

I am His

            Because we are in Christ:

-       We are given His righteousness. “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). We are shielded from God’s judgment as Jesus took the brunt of our sin for us. We are presented blameless before God, able to approach Him for relationship.

-       We share in Christ’s inheritance. “Now if we are children, then we are heirs— heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17). We have everything to which Jesus has access. We join Jesus at the right hand of God. We have intimacy and unhindered communion with God.

-       Our future is secure. We are permanently in Him. Therefore, we cannot be separated from Him, in life or death. Our eternity will be forever spent in fellowship with God. “…nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).

-       Our old selves died with Christ, and we will be resurrected just as He was. “For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his” (Romans 6:5).

He is mine

            Because Christ lives in us:

-       We have constant fellowship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. “Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him…” Ephesians 3:17.

-       We have access to God’s power through the Holy Spirit to overcome sin and bear fruit. “Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me” (John 15:4).

-       We are being transformed into Christ’s likeness. “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6).

What greater hope is there than knowing we are forever united to Christ! We can face the day because He is working through us. We can face our future because we have assurance that we will remain with Him always, even in death. Enjoy this playlist I’ve put together as you meditate on the truth, “I am His, and He is mine!”
